Garcia de Paredes, Pablo. 2021. “A Digitally Mediated Experience of Home: Contemporary Meanings of Home, Digital Communications and Scientific Evidence during the Global Pandemic.” Presented at the EDRA52, Detroit.
This presentation explores how the meaning and experience of home evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic through digitally mediated interactions. Lockdowns created unprecedented opportunities to virtually “enter” people’s houses, observing physical and social changes over time. Drawing on the concept of a digitally mediated sensory experience—where proximity, perspective, and the absence of touch shape perception—we examine the psychological and social dimensions of home as conveyed through screens. This study highlights how digital communications reframed domestic environments, revealing both the resilience and fragility of the home as a personal, social, and symbolic space in times of global crisis.
